With Internet technology fast becoming a key component of public education, Comcast is now offering $10 per month home Internet access to families who qualify for free OR REDUCED (new for 2012-13) school lunch. The offer is part of a new program called Internet Essentials, which will provide the low-cost Internet in any area where Comcast provides service. Families will be responsible for taxes on the $10 services, but will not have to pay fees for activation or equipment rentals. Families also can receive a laptop computer for $150 plus tax when they sign up and are eligible to receive free Internet training. The computer comes equipped with parental controls to protect children online. In order to be eligible, families must not have subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the previous 90 days, and must not have an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment.
